Lester Frank ward as a sociologist of gender: A new look at his sociological work.Barbara Finlay - 1999 - Gender and Society 13 (2):251-265.
This article analyzes the writings of Lester Frank Ward on relevant topics in the sociology of gender. Although Ward's work on the subjection of women has been largely ignored, a new look at these writings reveals much of interest. His theory of early female superiority in human societies, his association of the rise of male dominance with the discovery of paternity and the development of property, his recognition of the role of conflict and force in human (...)

The study of anarchism as a philosophical, political, and social movement has burgeoned both in the academy and in the global activist community in recent years. Taking advantage of this boom in anarchist scholarship, Nathan J. Jun and Shane Wahl have compiled twenty-six cutting-edge essays on this timely topic in New Perspectives on Anarchism.

    Ward’s Hegelian Conception of the State.Marko Dokić & Vladimir Bakrač - 2022 - Filozofska Istrazivanja 42 (2):333-352.
This paper examines the social theory of Lester Frank Ward, one of the most significant representatives of early American social theory, with particular attention to his conception of the state, which can be described as Hegelian. The first part of the paper gives a brief overview of early American social theory: its basic features, the issues that were the focus of attention during this period in the development of sociology in the US, and its most significant representatives. Is medicine an exact science?Lester S. King - 1952 - Philosophy of Science 19 (2):131-140.
It is an interesting paradox that on the one hand intemperate enthusiasm greets new medical discoveries. On the other hand, the lack of science in medicine is paraded from time to time, usually as a matter of apologetics, as, when a physician wishes to excuse an error, a lawyer to discredit a physician, or a jury to render a verdict contrary to medical evidence. Philosophers who insist on the mathematical or quantitative aspects in any definition of science ascribe very little (...)

    Educating Nurses for Their Future Role in Bioethics.Frank J. Leavitt - 1996 - Nursing Ethics 3 (1):39-52.
The emerging new multidisciplinary and crosscultural field of bioethics will require sen sitive, open-minded professionals to take the lead in hospital ethics, in genetic coun selling, and in the teaching of bioethics to students in nursing, medicine and the basic sciences. Nurses with ward experience who return to university to gain an MA or PhD in bioethics are eminently suited for this leadership role, for they may be more likely than physicians to study for a liberal education to supplement (...)

Apophasis as the common root of radically secular and radically orthodox theologies.William Franke - 2013 - International Journal for Philosophy of Religion 73 (1):57-76.
On the one hand, we find secularized approaches to theology stemming from the Death of God movement of the 1960s, particularly as pursued by North American religious thinkers such as Thomas J.J. Altizer, Mark C. Taylor, Charles Winquist, Carl Raschke, Robert Scharlemann, and others, who stress that the possibilities for theological discourse are fundamentally altered by the new conditions of our contemporary world. Our world today, in their view, is constituted wholly on a plane of immanence, to such an extent (...)

  49. Informational Virtues, Causal Inference, and Inference to the Best Explanation.Barry Ward - manuscript
Frank Cabrera argues that informational explanatory virtues—specifically, mechanism, precision, and explanatory scope—cannot be confirmational virtues, since hypotheses that possess them must have a lower probability than less virtuous, entailed hypotheses. We argue against Cabrera’s characterization of confirmational virtue and for an alternative on which the informational virtues clearly are confirmational virtues. Our illustration of their confirmational virtuousness appeals to aspects of causal inference, suggesting that causal inference has a role for the explanatory virtues. We briefly explore this possibility, delineating (...)
